Since I was a little girl, my sweetest moments are spent behind the camera lens. My aunt would hand me her 35mm to take "pretend pictures" and I saw photographs everywhere. At age 8, my mother had a book of stamps left over at the Top Value Stamp Redemption Store and gave in to my begging -- the Brownie Instamatic camera in the display case was mine. It was a moment that would come to define my life.
In the beginning, I took photographs of my family doing everyday things. Here are my first black and white photos , captured in spring 1963.
